The four types of diffuser
Before you buy, know what you're buying. Only three of these are worth your money.
- Ultrasonic. Water + a vibrating disc = fine mist of water + oil. Safe around pets and kids, quiet, 3โ8 hour run time. The default recommendation for 95% of households.
- Nebulizing. Pressurized air atomizes the oil directly, no water, no heat. Stronger scent throw, purer diffusion, but loud, expensive, and uses oil faster. Good for large open rooms or someone who really cares about scent intensity.
- Heat / tealight. Warms the oil until it evaporates. Cheap, but heat degrades the oil and destroys the delicate compounds. Skip.
- Evaporative / reed. Air passes over oil-soaked material or reeds. Passive, quiet, no plug, low scent throw. Fine for small bathrooms or closets โ not the main space.
